VIEWS ON POLICE

Reply To Mr J. C. Fletcher (N.Z. Preu Association) WELLINGTON, June 2 An attack on the views expressed by a retiring superintendent of police. Mr J C. Fletcher, of Dunedin, regarding police promotions nd other matters was made today by the Commissioner of Police (Mr C. L Spencer'. Mr Spencer said if Mr Fletcher had read official statements and publications he would know of the general progress as well as a reorganisation in the shape of divisions in the Auckland district would make necessary the appointment of more officers and consequently created general movement in the lower ranks. There was nothing ad lib jbout this, said Mr Spencer Regarding what as he described as an ill-considered statement on promotion as well as a cutting one about the young constables of today. Mr Spencer said these constables were better educated and better trained to deal with the work in hand than the constables of Mr Fletcher's day. "Finally, we have Mr Fletcher's pronouncement about the dropping of the word ‘force.’ Thia word is associated with suppression and violence. Now it is gone snd the New Zealand police prefer to be known to the public as a police service." said Mr Spencer.
