FRIENDLIEST TOURISTS
No Complaints
In Defeat
The English Rugby team’s record of four games lost out of five gives it one of the poorest results of any side to tour New Zealand, but those bare figure* do not indicate the .tremendous impression the team made during its short stay in New Zealand.
It was probably the friendliest touring team that has been to New Zealand. The managers J. T. W Berry and M. R. SteeteBodger) have been regarded as the most approachable of any Rugby officials to come to New Zealand. In defeat there were no complaints and the players, disappointed though they were with their form, still remained cheerful and friendly. The New Zealand captain (W. J. Whineray) summed up. the team when he said they* were “the most gentlemanly” he had ever played against. And, be added, that was not meant in the sense that they did not play hard Rugby. “They played good, sound Rugby but in a sporting manner which showed that international matches need not be tainted by any bitterness.”
