LONDON. June 1
The "down - and - out” clothes worn by Britain's
Prime Minister (Mr Macmillan) are sharply criticised .n "Tailor and Cutter," the weekly journal of the clothing trade The journal’s editor, Mr John Taylor, wrote caustically of a press picture of Mr Macmillan Leaving church near his Sussex home "wearing a suit heavily patched at the knees.”
Mr Taylor suggested Mr Macmillan was either "dutifully economising in the interests of the nation’s parlous financial stake, or the rigours of his Sunday sup-
plication, coupled with the bones of bis brew Scots knees, have forced a perforation as holy as a hairshirt ” He said: "What can be the reason for this absurd situation where the chief executive of a proud nation only has to stamp about in trousers more suitable to Dutchmen and such men. bit says ‘I always wear the same suit. When U wears out I tell my tailor to send another one’’”
Mr Taylor said that the Prime Minister’s "lack at sartorial felicity” might be dismissed by some as "at the best, eccentricity. and, at worst, pure humbug"
