Fall In Job Vacancies
Employment in the Christchurch • district for May showed some fall in local vacancies but the position was generaly quiet, said the District Superintendent of the Labour Department, Mr C P. Collins, yesterday Figures for the month showed there were 118 males unemployed, 59 being on unemployment benefit. The 16 unemployed females were all on unemployment benefit. The Labour Department had 390 enrolments for labour--343 male and 47 female—for the month.' The department placed 190 males in jobs and 24 females. Mr Collins said he had noticed that a very high percentage of those enrolling for jobs were extremely limited in their physical capacity. Some men were being placed in factories and with builders. There was not, he said, an acute demand for labour in Christchurch. Nor would an acute demand be expected at this time of the year. A fairly high percentage of the total unemployed were on unemployment benefit Twenty out of the 30 people who enrolled last, were fit only for light work. Surprisingly, he said, there were only two freezing workers among the 30 enrolments.
