£15,105 Loss For C.J.C. In Year

The Canterbury Jockey Club lost £15,105 on its operations for the year just ended. The club showed a profit of £4053 for the previous year.

The chairman, Mr G. H. Grigg, lists three main reasons for the £15,105 loss in his annual report, which will be presented to the annual general meting of members on June 18.

They were: A “disastrous” autumn meeting as a result of bad weather which also affected other meetings. A loss on the Royal meeting.

A large increase in expenditure on racecourse maintenance, mostly on work carried out in conjunction with the building of the new stand and other improvements.

Mir Grigg reports that the loss on the Royal meeting will be largely recouped when the dub receives its share of the Totalisator Agency’s profits at the end of the board’s financial year, as the off-course investments for this meeting were substantial

The report says: “The outstanding event of the year, of course, was the visit to Riccarton of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11, and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, and while the attendance was less than

anticipated, the Royal Race meeting was a wonderful success, and the occasion a highlight in the history of the club.

“On New Zealand Cup day. the new stand for members was officially opened by Dr A. McGregor Grant, vicepresident of the New Zealand Racing Conference Although there has been criticism in some quarters, members generally appear to be well satisfied with the amenities now provided for them, while the improved public facilities are greatly apprecia ted by non-mem-bers.” The deaths of the following members are recorded with regret: Mesdames L. C Barr and M Burgess. Messrs W H. Abbott, C. P Agar. E C Anderson. R. S Baird. E W Bolwell. J Brooks. O C Cox, J M Eadie, A S Elworthy J Farrell, G. J T. D Jarman. J L Ma' i lane. J T McCorkindale. R L. McCormack, P Mclver, R. T McMillan. J A. Neilson, M. P. Nottingham, R. J, Waldie. and W Wright.

“Mr Elworthy gave splendid service to the club as a member of the committee and a steward for a very long period,” says the report. “He was chairman for 13 years, and at the time of his death was an honorary life member He also served with distinction as president of the New Zealand Racing Conference for several vea ns ”

Mr D W J Gould is the only nominee for the office of honorary treasurer There will’ be no election for the committee, but there have been 10 proposed for the election of five stewards. Government taxes. at £115.083. were easily the biggest item of expenditure for the year. The club distributed £82.875 in stakes. spent £14.986 on racecourse maintenance. and paid £15.280 in salaries and wages.

Income from the total isator amounted to £203,904 including £33.094 from the TA.B

Gate receipts dropped from £15.621 to £14.871 but subscriptions rose from £5136 to £11.197, and entries and acceptance fees rose from £9709 to £11,575 The sum of £9978 was written off on ouildings, machinery and other assets.
