MANILA. May 29
A Ministerial meeting next month is expected to be followed by a top-level conference among President Soekarno of Indonesia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, of Malaya, and President Macapagal, of the Philippines, to discuss differences involving the projected Malaysia Federation. The Philippines had always wanted a meeting between President Soekarno and the Tunku so that they could thrash out their differences.
President Macapagal plans to confer With the Tunku during the latter’s 45-minute stop at Manila tomorrow on his way to Tokyo. The Tunku is flying to Tokyo for talks with President Soekarno.
Mr Macapagal’s Foreign Secretary, Mr E. Pelaez, told reporters the Philippines considered the scheduled talks between President Soekarno and the Tunku as “a very encouraging step forward in bringing about understanding between Malaya and Indonesia.”
He said the talks were part of preliminary moves for a meeting of the Indonesian, Malayan and Philippine Foreign Ministers scheduled to begin in Manila on June 7 Mr Pelaez said he hoped the Tokyo talks would “prepare the right atmosphere" for the Ministerial meeting.
