Dreaming’s Upset In Trotters’ Race

Dreaming, which had failed badly in four starts since she won at Nelson on February 4, caused a major surprise when she won the Stewards’ Handicap at Ashburton yesterday. K. D. Murray had her prominently placed throughout the race and when he pulled her clear inside the furlong, she settled the issue very quickly and came on to win handily.

No Trumps, which was closely attended by Diomedes near the mile post, set most of the pace, but she was in trouble at the three furlongs. Robert Medoro, which had been handy from the mile post, worked clear with more than two furlongs to run.

second division, and. although appearing to be well beaten inside the furlong, he came again to win by a head from Willycan. Mile End was a fair third, well dear of Trudy Helen, which was checked early, and Rouleau.

Robert Medoro shaded No Trumps racing to the furlong post, with Nimble Grattan, Queen’s Cord. Dreaming. Fiammetta, Kerry Cord, Astralight, and Kyran, which broke at the half-furlong, handy. Dreaming came through about the half-furlong and she was untroubled to win by a length from the light-sup-ported Nimble Grattan, Kerry Cord came home well for third a neck back, a short length in front of Oakleigh Lad. Robert Medoro was right up, ahead of Kyran, Queen’s Cord, Medieval, No Trumps, and Fiammetta. Tarseal, Bandsaw, Queen’s Cord, Donnybrook, Medieval, and Hindu gave ground at the start Game Finish Cheta, one of the horses on 24 yards, overcame his awkward handicap with a game finish when he won the Rakaia Handicap. Cheta was well back early, but he improved gradually from the half-mile. He followed El Adem and Fury River into the straight, with Nigger Minstrel, Blonde Piper, and Morsel handiest of the others. Fury River raced to a short lead inside the furlong, but she was soon in trouble when challenged by Cheta. The last-named was kept up to his work to win by a length. Fury River added to her consistent record when she held second by a length from Blonde Piper, which finished fast along the rails. El Adem was only a neck back fourth, clear of Nigger Minstrel, Faru, Messala, Morsel, and Garcon d’Or. Messala, Roseland Song. Faru, Toll Call, anad Wee Lord gave ground at the start. Southland Horses Two Southland horses in Storm, King and Conga Flight both of which were at doublefigure odds, won the divisions of the Tinwald Handicap. Storm King raced in about fifth position and close to the leader, Bonnie Widow, throughout the first division. He moved through on the inner just inside the furlong and ran on gamely to win by half a neck.

Rangipo, which received a perfect trail, was second, a nose in front of Leyava, with half a head to Charlesworth Flyn was a fair fifth, ahead of the tiring Bonnie Widow. Conga Flight took the lead with nine furlongs left in the

Smart Run

Waycom recorded a smart effort for a three-year-old when he won the Allenton Handicap. He trotted the two miles after meeting difficulties in the good time of 4min 35 4-ssec. He was about eleventh in the middle stages, but improved sharply to be fourth into the last furlong. Waycom ran on strongly to win by a short length. Courtella, which met trouble early and had to change direction in the straight, did well to finish second, half a length in front of Southern Prince, with half a length to a solid finisher in Wayle.ggo. Ardleigh made ground for fifth, ahead of Smokey John, Wayren, and Port Hope. Chief Lynn and Rannack Song won tiheir divisions of the Improvers’ Handicap. Chief Lynn came strongly from handy to the leaders at the furlong and ran on strongly to win by a length and a half from Earl Globe, with Chiefly and Rekots next. Rannack Song, a surprise win favourite, led over the last mile and a half in the second division and fought on strongly un,der pressure to beat Stormy Prince, which did not receive a good run, by a head, with a length and a half back to the tiring Chief Adviser, and a gap to Glenchalmer, which made up a lot of ground.
