France today entered what is due to be the last day of the State of emergency under which she has lived for over two years
The state of elhergency. inaugurated for Algeria on April 3 1955, was extended to France by President de Gaulle after the general's putsch in Algiers on April 22. 1961
Twice extended by presidential decree to cope with “activism” in the country ihe emergency is legally due to end tonight at midnight.
It has provided the authorities with wide powers of search, arrest and internment Its passing will in no way affect the new State Security Court brought into being by act of Parliament to try plotters.
