R. D Clarke. the Canterbury Chess Club's 1961 champion, drew level with G V. Sumner, last year's runner-up at the head of the senior tournament when Clarke beat N. M Cooper Clarke and Sumner each have four points in five fames In the nineround tournament. What could be the deciding game of the tournament, however the game between these two players, was adjourned last week with Sumner in a strong position. Clarke, who was third in the New Zealand Chess Congress tournament at New Year. wIU give a simultaneous display at the Canterbury club rooms In Bealev avenue on Saturday. June 8. to make a chanfe and extension in club playing evenings. As far as can be ascertained. the club has played on Tuesdays and Fridays without missing a single playing evening. since its foundation In 18SS. From June 8 the playing evenings w-ill be Tuesday. Thursday, and Saturday. The Saturday playing evening is expected to be especially popular with the vounger plavers. At Queen s Birthday weekend two tournaments will be held in the South Island The South Island tournament ttself will be held at Cromwell at the invitation of the newly affiliated club there, and the Nelson district chamoionghlpe will take place at Nelson.
