NATIONAL YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Christchurch
Thirteen young Christchurch musicians have been chosen to play in the National Youth Orchestra. Rehearsals will be held by members in each centre until the end of August. when all will assemble in Auckland for a week’s work under Mr John Hopkins before giving public performances in Wellington and Wanganui. Christchurch plavers selected are:—-Violins, Kathryn Evans. Malcolm Mackie and Robin Perks; viola Stephen Estall; ’cellos. Brian Sandle and Mary Williams; double bass. Gerald New’son: flute. Helen Colthart; oboe Brian MrCahon: clarinets "'auline Drain and Antony Reev?; bass trombone. Ronald Adams; tuba. Warwick Slinn Also selected were Gareth Parry 'Kaiapoil and Graeme Jameson (Ashburton) Their instruments are the oboe and trombone respectively.
Good Start.—England’s soccer team came dramatically back to form when it beat the World Cup runner-up. Czechoslovakia 4-2 in the first match of a three-game European tour.— IP A 1
