U.S. Standards For N.Z. Meat
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, May 30. Meat packers in New Zealand were well aware of the standard laid down by the United States Department of Agriculture and there was strong evidence that steps were being taken to meet these requirements, but there was room still for improvement, Dr. C. H. Pals said todav.
Director of the Meat Inspection Division in the Agricultural Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture, Dr. Pals came to New Zealand last Saturday after attending the Australian Veterinary Association conference in Sydney and left
Auckland tonight to return to Washington. Dr Pals met the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Taiboys) and inspected freezing works at Longburo. Feildiiing, Horotui and Auckland.
In the year ended June 30. 1962 the United States had imparted 171A58.766!b of meat produce from New Zealand It had rejected 794 2411 b. The percentage of rejected meat was not high, but it was higher than the United States and New Zealand departments of agriculture liked and was a reflection on the New Zealand export programme.
New Zealand needed mere veterinarians to carry out post-mortem examinations in the works. Dr. Pals said A veterinary school was planned but it was a paper project still and it would be some years before New Zealand - trained veterinarians would be available. Salaries were too low in New Zealand to attract overseas veterinarians.
