Dog Without Food

(N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER, May 27. Mr W. A. Harlow, S.M., today described Wiebe van der Veen, aged 24, a farmhand of Awatoto, as a “callous brute.” Van der Veen had pleaded guilty to a charge of leaving his Alsatian dog without shelter, food or water. The Magistrate convicted him and imposed a fine of £25. Senior-Sergeant R. D. L. Jones said van der Veen left the district for a week to attend a funeral at Levin. The 14-mon.th-old dog was left chained to a fence. After three to four days the dog was found with the chain wrapped around its neck. “It was weak and savage,” Senior-Sergeant Jones said.
