ASSAULTED POLICE
Magistrate On Use Of Batons (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. May 27. Offences committed by a drunken man against two police officers at Takapuna would not have been so serious if the police had not used their batons during the early stages of the arrest, said Mr M. C. Astley, S.M.. in the Magistrate’s Court, today. The Magistrate sent Roger Matthew Barton, aged 23, a bricklayer, to prison for a month, after he had pleaded guilty to two charges of assaulting the police officers, two charges of resisting them, and a charge of interfering with a police car valued s>t £lOOO He dad not intend any specific criticism of the police Because he realised the difficulties they faced in arresting persons who were under the influence of drink, the Magistrate said.
