Loughlen kicked off for Hawke's Bay and England was awarded a penalty almost immediately. However, Hosen’s long kick failed to find touch and Hawke's Bay took the ball and pushed forward. Kivell attempted a penalty three minutes later, but his kick from about six yards inside England’s half fell short. Hawke’s Bay opened the scoring after five minutes.
