Forwards Give Bay Early Command

Loughlen kicked off for Hawke's Bay and England was awarded a penalty almost immediately. However, Hosen’s long kick failed to find touch and Hawke's Bay took the ball and pushed forward. Kivell attempted a penalty three minutes later, but his kick from about six yards inside England’s half fell short. Hawke’s Bay opened the scoring after five minutes. The ball was kicked ahead by Johnson. Sykes misjudged the bounce and Furlong scooped up the ball, ran three yards and passed to Macrae who touched down. Hawke’s Bay 3 England 0 Hosen’s first attempt at goal fell just short. The Hawke’s Bay forwards were holding the English team well, and Abel and Hiha, with fine support from Stone and Tremain, sowed the seeds of victory. From the kicjc-off Hawke’s Bay charged down the line. The English backs began a passing movement but Weston fumbled and Macrae was lucky with the bounce and scored well out.
