New Award For Hotel Workers

Workers, other than kitchen staff, in licensed hotels receive an extra 5s 6d a week under a new award for New Zealand licensed hotel employees issued by the Arbitration Court. The award, which contains an unqualified preference clause, came into effect on April 15. Cooks and ‘ kitchen hands are granted a general increase of 5s 6d, but In some cases the increase is Bs. An extra 8s a week is to be paid to non-resident workers employed on broken shifts. The award allows for changes in the rates of pay to female general hands when relieving jn the kitchen on the kitchen staff’s days off. In kitchens employing one general hand or three general hands, an additional 7s 6d a week is to be paid to the relief. In kitchens employing two general hands the relief is to receive an additional 15s. Casual employees receive an increase of Is a week, and a similar increase is granted to staff working on special occasions, such as for exhibitions or fairs.
