N.Z. Gains May Not Last

New Zealand continues to gain population at the expense of Australia, but it is doubtful whether this gain wHI maintain its present high rate In the last 16 years Australians intending permanent residence in New Zealand have outnumbered New Zealanders going the other way bv 19.190 The latest issue of the Labour Department’s “Labour and Employment Gazette” shows that since 1948, Australia gained frorr New Zealand in only five years, four of them before 1952

Since 1948 49,465 people nave left for Australia intending permanent residence and 68,655 Australians have arrived here for the same purpose They have been substantial contributors to our total immigration figuresecond only to the United Kingdom in the last few years

The gazette warns that one of the reasons for the heavy gains to New Zeaand in the iast two years—more than 10 000 people—was the Australian economic recession, which is now easing Gains are not expected to continue a’ the present high rate Last gear’s net gain of 3889 was I ttle more than half that of the previous year.
