TOY PISTOL HOLD-UP
Borstal Term For Youth (N.Z. Press Association) OAMARU, May 13. An 18-year-old youth who attempted to hold up an Oarnaru shop with a toy pistol was today sentenced to a term of Borstal training by Mr N. M. Izard, S.M., in the Oarnaru Magistrate’s Court. Murray Herbert Curwood pleaded guilty to charges of assault with intent to rob and attempted burglary.
Detective J. L. Marshall said Curwood had entered the May White Confectionary wearing a mask and sun glasses. He threatened the proprietor, Mary Ann White, aged ?2, with a toy pistol and demanded to know where the shop takings were. Curwood threw Miss White to the floor and searched unsuccessfully for the money He told her he was “going to get the boys” and left, Detective Marshall said. Mr B. T. Caird submitted that Curwood had not thrown Miss White to the floor; he had pushed her away as she came towards him. It was Curwood’s first venture into crime, he added. The Magistrate said both crimes were serious. Curwood’s explanation for the crime, that he was short of money, was no excuse.
