PRISONER CAUGHT

Tracked By Police Dog (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 13. After 43 hours’ freedom, the Waikune Prison escaper, Robert John Collins, was recaptured at Te Kura, north of Taumarunui, at 4.15 p.m. today. He was carrying his shoes and was not wearing prison clothes.

Collins was thought to be in the area after a car missing from National Park was found abandoned on the outskirts of Taumarunui, after it had been chased by Constable R. Antill, of National Park, late on Saturday night. Reports from the area were received concerning a man riding a bicycle who resembled Collins, and he was tracked by Constable H. E. Davies of New Plymouth, and his dog Cito for about a mile from where children saw him leave the road and take to scrub.

With Constable Davies was Mr J. Murphy, a farmer, and Constable C. Chestnut of Wanganui.

The 24-year-old escaper offered no resistance. Without the help of the dog, the prisoner would still have been free, said Constable Davies. . _

The search for a prisoner who escaped from the Hautu prison farm yesterday is continuing. He is Edwin Noel Toomey, aged 23. The Mount Eden escaper. George Wilder, is also still free.
