Weight Left In Stall Royal Leigh, which finished second, half a neck behind Persuasive in the Ashburton County Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday was disqualified after the race when his rider, N. Eastwood, weighed in 5J lb light It was found after an inquiry that the lead bag was left in Royal Leigh’s stall The trainer. P. H Jones, who had not been before a committee previously as a trainer, was reprimanded. After the Ashburton County Handicap a jockey, D. N. Hadfield, was taken before the judicial committee and fined £1 Is for insolence to birdcage stewards. Lucky Son. after being examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon, was declared not fit to run in the second leg of the double, the Coldstream Handicap. He was a late scratching. Sura (B. Isherwood) lost several lengths three furlongs from home in the Coldstream Handicap. When questioned. Isherwood said his mount had slipped badly and had been lucky to stand up. Pleasant Ways lost his rider. A. J. Perucich, at the hurdle by the mile in the Winchmore Hack Hurdles Perucich was sent to hospital for attention to a cut hand. Supreme Effort (K. Quale) fell at the second hurdle and Sports Date 'T. W. Wilson) fell at the second last in the same event. i Two riders were cautioned after the Apprentice Hack Handicap. M. F. Dowling, the rider of Sir Athol, was cautioned tor allowing his mount to run in over the concluding stages. B. G. Hobbs (Golden Days) was cautioned for allowing his mount to shift ground on turning for home. Bridie O’Cally was checked. The incident was accidental.
Promising Colt Destroyed The promising Wingatui two-year-old Golden Craze had to be destroyed ait Ashburton on Saturday. Golden Craze stumbled when lying second on the home turn in the Lauriston Handicap and broke a front fetlock joint. A colt, by Messmate from Tidavale, Golden Craze was having his seventh start for his owner, Mr J. M. Palmer. From the previous six he had been twice placed and a winner over five furlongs at Wingatui last December A. N. .Didham trained him at Wingatui.
Golden Defaulter In Bad Fall “The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, May 12. The top-class jumper. Golden Defaulter, a nine-year-old. made his first blunder when contesting the G. W. Vercoe Steeplechase at Te Rapa yesterday. The consequences are likely to keep him from racing for a considerable time. Golden Defaulter was moving to a nice position close to the eventual winner. Uncle Joe, with about a mile to go but misjudged the next fence, a moderately tough brush, hit hard on the top rail, and fell. Golden Defaulter badlygashed a knee, which afterwards required 10 stitches He also tore a muscle over his rump. His trainer, R. T. Cotter, had difficulty in getting Golden Defaulter back to his stable, w-hich is nearby. Golden Defaulter, which won the test Grand National Steeplechase and the Brighton Hurdles, was to have been in the Waikato Steeplechase next Saturday. He had not previously fallen either la a race or when training.
