TRAPPED IN ROOM

Man Dragged From Blaze (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. May 12. A man trapped on the top floor of a burning boarding house in Abel Smith street. Wellington, today, was dragged from his room and flung downstairs through smoke and flames to safety. No-one was injured in the blaze which considerably damaged the upper-storey rooms Firemen had to use breathing apparatus to enter the building. The trapped man. Mr J. Steward, was rescued by a fellow boarder, Mr C. Butler. The Are was discovered by the lessee. Mr F. Rennick. “Mr Rennick said he smelt gas,” said Mr Butler. “Then we heard the tinkle of glass We ran out of the room and saw smoke and flames near the stairs. “I ran down the street to telephone the tire brigade. When I got back Mr Rennick said his family was out of the house. “Then I said. What about Jimmy?’ Mr Rennick said he didn't know if he was out. “I grabbed a wet towel and rushed upstairs. There were smoke and flames about half-way up. “When I got to Jimmy’s room. he was wandering about and didn’t seem to know how to get out. It was thick with smoke. I grabbed him and threw him downstairs. then I got out.”
