FIRE RAZES HOUSE
Two Outbreaks In Nine Hours (From Our Own Reporter) WAIMATE. May 12. Fire destroyed a fourroomed wooden house at Waimate in the early hours of this morning. An earlier outbreak in one room had been dealt with on Saturday afternoon, and the building declared safe after an inspection by brigadesmen at 8.30 pun. on Saturday. An explosion occurred in the building soon after the brigade units arrived to answer a second call. The explosion was accompanied by a sheet of flame. The house, in Manchester street, on the outskirts of the town, had been purchased recently by Mr T. Kennard. It had no furniture in it and was being renovated. When the Waimate Volunteer Fire Brigade answered the first call, given by a neighbour, at 4.15 p.m. on Saturday, the fire was confined to the kitchen, which was gutted. When the alarm was given at 1.40 a.m. today the building was a mass of flames and after the explosion occurred the position was hopeless. The police have been asked to investigate.
