State House Rents

Sir,—The 1958 rental increases were made by Labour under legislation passed by the National Party. Mr Rae did not mention this nor did he mention that in 1950, an increase in building costs was the result of controls being lifted by the National Party Government. In 1958. Labour was faced with an empty Treasury because of the actions of a spendthrift National Party Government, which left only meagre overseas funds behind it Labour had to increase the rents to save us from bankruptcy. The local Labour MP.’s assure me that they do have hosts of urgent applications, and they try to get action in spite of the desire of the Gvemment to channel the prospective applicants to private accommodation. Labour M.P.’s and myself

are anxious to know when Mr Rae is going to close Wairuna loop transit block, and put the tenants into State houses for which he claims the demand has fallen in Christchurch.—Yours, etc., DISILLUSIONED NATIONALIST May 11, 1963.
