Farmers Advised To Spray
Emerging wheat crops should be closely Inspected for aphid infestation, warns the special committee which has been set up to study reports of cereal aphid flights and to advise farmers on treatment of their wheat crops to control the aphides which spread the yellow dwarf virus. Results from the Lincoln area suggest that the level of aphid flight up to the present this year is as severe as in 1962—a bad wheat-virus year
Aphid traps have been located in all the major wheat-growing areas in the South Island These are being changed at regular intervals. In addition, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research are doing- regular sweep netting at each site of pastures and greenfeed to provide further information on aphid incidence. Most autumn-sown cereal crops at the two-leaf stage or older will have been infested with these aphides from early autumn flights. Spraying this month of crops intended for grain would be warranted if they are infested Spraying of crops intended for grazing is. however, governed by regulations, and advice should be obtained from the Department of Agriculture.
