The trial of the British Businessman, Greville Wynne, and the Russian, Oleg Penkovsky, resumed m open session today and adjourned almost two hours later, when all witnesses had been heard
Before the trial reopened this morning, Wynne’s Russian defence lawyer said he thought the two accused would make their final pleas tomorrow, pending a verdiet iomorrow night Wynne, aged 44, has admitted acting as courier between British intelligence and Penkovsky. a 44-yea.r-old scientific worker But he has blamed British officials for “landing me here,” and said ’hey had deceived and then threatened him.
Both men have pleaded guilty—Wynne “with reservations ” The Briton, if convicted. faces a sentence of between seven and 15 years in gaol or death, while Penk- vsky faces 10 to 15 years or death /
The women in the life of Penkovsky dominated evidence this morning, and at one point the Court President interrupted one witness to say “That's enough on the subject of women ” Another witness gave a colou’-ful account of his visits to Moscow clubs with Penkovsky. including an incident in which Penkovsky drank p rom a woman’s shoe to orove his respect for her.
