No sinister secrets about the proposed United States Navy radio station for Western Australia were being “hidden under the rug.” the commander in chief of the United States Pacific fleet. Admiral John H. Sides, said in Melbourne today. “This is a communications station period. Nothing more. A lot of people have suspicions that certain things are being hidden under the rug. They are mistaken.” Admiral Sides, who is here as chief United State® representative for the annual Coral Sea celebrations, said he was delighted at the result of this week's Gallup Poll, which showed that about 80 per cent, of Australians were in favour of the proposed radio station.

Agreement® between the United States and Australia to establish the £A33,000,000 radio station in Western Australia were signed in Canberra this morning. The Australian Minister for External Affairs (Sir Garfield Barwick) told the House of Representatives today the Unitpd States would be the only operator of the base which will communicate with submerged submarines. He said the agreement restricted. without qualification, use of the station to purposes of defence communication. except with Australian consent
