BIRD SEED CROP

Experiment In Otago (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. May 8. Otago farmers have backed moves to establish a birdseed industry in Central Otago which may save the country £lOO,OOO in overseas exchange. , A nine-ton trial consignment, promoted by the Otago Development Council, is to appear on the New Zealand market soon.

The seed is now being packed in a Dunedin factory. The trial took place at Hrwea on 20 acres belonging to Mir B. Drake. Mr Drake told the annual conference of the agricultural section of Otago Federated Farmers that the crop had yielded just under half a ton an acre, which was higher than Australian production.

His motion calling on the Government to give farmers the necessary protection to enable them to grow canary seed commercially In the country and save overseas exchange, was passed unanimously.
