More Fountains Wanted

Sir, —For goodness sake let’s have a “make New Zealand like itself” campaign. In the course of travels all over the British Isles I have yet to see a “small cathedral town” (city, please) or anywhere else even remotely resembling Christchurch (except, perhaps, along the river banks). There are many nations in the British Empire, but in no other country do so many folk act as if they were ashamed to belong. Why, they don’t even like the way they speak! This is a beautiful country and a nation in its own right. Let’s be proud of it and keep its individuality. Even inside Britain each country and county, over 80 in England alone, has its own speech and way of life. Who would dare call a Cornishman “English”? I suggest we start giving folk reasons to want to copy New Zealand for a change.—Yours, etc., TRAVELLER. May 6, 1963.
