Good Start To Senior Table Tennis Matches

rpHE 1963 A grade table ten- •* nis competition has provided the ’highest standard yet at the beginning of a season. Many strong teams have 'Jte chance to take the title and hard matches are expected. The strong Selwyn team has split its strength into two teams after dominating Canterbury table tennis for nine years. Other teams, sensing a chance for top honours, have been practising hard and the results of the opening night showed it is many years since players have been so fit at such an early stage. Selwyn led by the brilliant backhand player and farmer international V. N. Brightwell, lost to Eagles by 4 matches to 8. Upsets were a feature of this contest. D. V. Fisher beat Brightwell and extended A.

Vermes, the former Wellington player. Mrs M. J. Shadbolt also played strongly and beat Vermes conforiably. Wallabies Red. which is favoured to take the championship, beat Avonside by the convincing margin of 12 matches to 0. N. B. Radford. M. A. Cox and K. F. Stevenson were in command in nearly all matches. Wallabies Green and University drew 15 matches all in a hard-fought battle with the result in doubt up to the final match. Selwyn H, after trailing by one match to four, made a late recovery to beat Star by 7 matches to 5. T. R. D. Flint, the veteran left-hander, played soundly and won nis singles match comfortably’ although H. P. Holt extended him at times.
