Keen Swimmers, But...

r pHE Kaiapoi Swimming Club has almost all the ingredients that go to make a successful sporting group. A filkratioo and chlorination plant was installed ait its 25-yard pool last season: it has a strong core of promising junior competitors and two keen coaches, Mr A. Crowe, formerly of Temuka, and Mr A G Thomas. well known in Westport swimming circles a few years ago. The club, however, has one definite need a body of persons sufficiently interested in the welfare of the club to’ give their services as committee members. Public apathy is the club's biggest stumbling block. From a population of about 3000 only four ' persons attended the annual meeting last year. When another meeting was held, there were only sufficient persons present to form a committee.

The club's need for officials will soon be greater, for Mrs A. Tourelle, who has been a stalwart in the organisation of Kalapoi swimming, wnll soon be lost to the district. At its annual meeting tonight, the chib hopes to receive sufficient support to form two committees, one to run the pool and the other to handle the competitive side of the club's activities. But the response will need to be far greater than last year, when it was necessary to appoint two school pupils to the general committee. The club has a keen group of young swimmers, who will begin a calisthenics course in July and gradually build up strength before taking to the water early next summer. With a team of officials matching the youngsters for enthusiasm, Kaiapoi could attain a prominent place among the swimming clubs of Canterbury.
