FIRE IN SULPHUR

Store Blaze “Risky Job” (N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER, May 7. Napier fireman stood by until 530 p.m. today at a 9000-ton bulk sulphur store which caught fire at 2 p.m. at the East Coast Farmers' fertiliser works. Awatoto. Flames flashed through the length of the huge store when a front end loader hit a concrete beam and sent sparks into sulphur-laden air The chief fire officer, Mr D. Anderson, said the main danger was averted by 3 pm. “But it was a risky job.” he said. “The whole place could have caught fire again if we had not been careful,” he said. Damage to the building was slight. Workmen left the premises and firemen worked in spells with breathing apparatus. Five fog deliveries were used to douse the flames. Sheets of flame shot across 'the inside of the building as firemen played water on to burning sulphur.
