ADDINGTON MARKET Fat Cattle Prices Improve With Small Entry

With an entry of only slightly more than 200 head, fat cattle values improved at Addington market yesterday. Steers sold at fully firm to slightly better rates and heifers were up to 30s dearer. Values for cows were steady. Steer calves looked to be slightly weaker in the store cattle sale, but heifer calves were fully firm on late rates and older graziers’ cattle met a similar market to last week. Fat lamb and sheep entries were considerably smaller but values were generally sound and fat ewes showed a significant advance.

The store sheep sale attracted a much smaller entry and interest in this section was limited. From a slack start values for store lambs improved to about late rates. Ewes were yarded in very small numbers but older ewes were not easy selling. On account of Anzac Day next week’s sales at Addington will be held on Monday and Tuesday. The fat stock classes will be sold on Monday and the store sheep and store cattle on Tuesday. STOKE SHEEP There was a further sharp reduction in the size of the store sheep market. The offering was down to 3949 compared with 7289 last week and included 3172 store lambs (4942 last week), 95 two-tooth ewes (110), 633 older ewes (1541) and 49 wethers (696).

Generally interest was once again fairly limited. The lamb offering was much smaller than last week and was mainly a typical end-of-season selection of indifferent quality, with a very infrequent good pen. The sale for lambs opened on a slacker note but it tended to improve slightly as the sale progressed and taking quality into account values were probably not a great deal different from last week.

Romney wether lambs in the wool ranged from about 30s to 38s Bd and best shorn Romney wether lambs made from 39s to 43s 6d, with average to good at 33s to 37s and others down to 28s Bd. Best woolly fine wool wether lambs brought from 36s to 38s, with average to good at 30s to 34s and others at 25s to 395, and shorn at 29s to 325. For Down cross lambs values ranged from 38s to 39s for the best, with average to 31s and others down to IBs.

A feature of the wether lamb Sle was an offering of shorn >mneys from C. B. Cottrell (Summerhill). Numbering 371 these sold from 33s to 435, With 71 at the top money. The estate T. W. McKay (Tai Tapu) also sold shorn Romneys at 39s and they were paid the same money for Down cross lambs. Mt. Vulcan, Ltd. (Omihi), received 38s for 39 woolly Corriedale wether lambs and E. G. Rutherford (Parnassus) realised 37s for 46 Corriedales. Shorn Corriedales made to 325, which was the price obtained by J. O. Arres (Waikari). Apart from the estate T. W. McKay. J. Corrigal (Pigeon Bay) also sold Down cross lambs at 38s.

In the ewe lamb sale where quality was also mainly average or below average, a very good pen of Romneys brought 675, but otherwise woolly Romney ewe lambs made from 39s to 47s 6d, with shorn sorts at 24s to 30s. The best of the woolly fine wool lambs brought to 51s, with average to good at 43s to 495, and others at 27s 6d to 355. Shorn fine wool ewe lambs sold at 28s to 355.

The top Romney ewe lambs were from L. P. Manion (Weedons). Totalling 47 these realised 675. The next best price for Romneys or Romney cross was 47s 6d for Romney cross from Birch Hill (Okuku). The best price for fine wools was 51s for 61 Corriedales from the Hawkswood Estate (Parnassus) and shorn fine wools sold to 35s for Corriedales from J. O. Arres (Walkari).

Gould, Guinness Ltd., sold: on account of T. D. Barwick (Te Oka), 70 Romney twotooth ewes at 60s. Older ewes were also forward in very small numbers and were of mixed quality. Demand was again restricted and sales were if anything harder to make than last week and values might have been fractionally easier.

Most of the small offering comprising either woolly or shorn Romney ewes and the ewes in the wool sold from about 33s to 36s with shorn sorts at 17s to 275. ■ The top price of 38s was paid for Romneys from the estate D. Barwick (Poranui). Sales included:—

FAT LAMBS The fat lamb yarding was much saialler and totalled 2079 head, compared with 3406 last week. Quality was quite good, but there were very few big. heavy lambs in the offering. The market opened at about late rates and showed a slight firming, but towards the end of the sale this tended to be lost as orders were filled. Over all. the market could be quoted fully firm on last week. Heavy lambs sold from 57s Id to Ms Id, with prime medium lambs at 48s Id to 55s Id, prime light lambs at 42s Id to 46s Id, and plain and light lambs at 39s Id to 41s Id. FAT SHEEP The fat sheep entry was much smaller and totalled only 1586, compared with 2632 last week and 3415 the week before. With only two killing days left before the next sale it was not surprising that demand from the trade was less, but the market was generally very sound. Two-tooth wethers showed a slight gain of a shilling or two, but there were not many top quality, heavy sorts on offer. There were plenty of good medium weights to meet requirements, however. Older wethers were scarce and there were insufficient to quote a market

Ewes were definitely firmer and there was some competition from wholesale interests. Values looked to be dearer by 2s to 3s a head on most pens. There were not many young ewes and these also met a sound sale. J R. Smith (Springbank) topped the wether sale with 10 at 70s Id and six at 69s Id, and the latter price was also gained by R. V. Burrows (Rakaia) with 13. Sales at 68s Id were made by J. J. Skurr and E. M. Skurr, both of Oxford. An exceptional sale of heavily Woolled ewes at 45s Id was made by Abbott Bros. (Southbridge) and W. FAT CATTLE With only 226 head yarded in the fat cattle section the sale was a strong one with values from fully firm to dearer. Quality was much better than last week’s poor offering of 343 head, but there were still some rough and light cattle not finished enough for the trade and these had to be transferred to the store pens. The strong point of the sale was the heifers which improved sharply in value by up to 30s a head. Steers sold strongly at values which were fully firm to about 20s dearer, and cows fully maintained late rates. Some of the best prime lightweight cattle brought around £7 or slightly better per 1001 b. Once again the market was topped by McDonnell Bros. (Totara Flat) with one Aberdeen Angus cross steer at £5l 2s 6d. Two more of their entry realised £5O 17s 6d and four £4B 17s 6d, and their average for 10 was £4B 3s Bd. J. F. Cracroft-Wilson (Cashmere) had sales up to £4B 2s Bd, and E. J. Pawsey (Ashburton) had sales at up to £47 17s 6d. Heifers realised to £35 17s 6d for one from H. L. STORE CALVES

The cattle entry was smaller than last week, and only 663 head were offered, compared with 1427. This included 434 calves and 229 older cattle.

Quality generally in the store calf offering was not quite as good as last week, and although there was a fairly big gallery following the sale there were many spectators. Steer calf values looked to be a trifle weaker, apart from the odd pen but heifer calves sold relatively well and were fully up to last week’s rates.

Best Aberdeen Angus and the Aberdeen Angus cross steer calves made £22 13s Bd. with good at £l6 8s 6d to £l7 18s Bd, average at £l4 16s to £l5 3s 6d, and others at £7 18s 6d to £lO 3s 6d. The best of the Hereford steer calves made £lB
