Three Union Secretaries

The national secretary of the New Zealand Clothing Trades Union, Mr R. A. Hill, of Christchurch, expects soon to realise a long-cherished ambition to see the National Theatre of China. He is one of three New Zealand trade unionists who are shortly to spend three weeks in China, including visits to Peking. Shanghai and Canton.

The other trade union leaders are the secretary of the Canterbury Gasworkers’ Union, Mr M. Rhodes, of Christchurch, and the secretary of the Auckland Labourers’ Union. Mr H. Kay. of Auckland. Mr Hill said he would be flying to Australia today and would travel to China via Hong Kong He would study labour and working conditions of many fields of endeavour in China, with particular emphasis on the clothing trade. When the opportunity availed itself on the trip he also intended to look into the clothing industries of other Asian countries such as Singapore. Mr Hill expects to be overseas for five or six weeks.

Tm looking forward to taking in some of the Chinese theatre.” he said. In China, Mr Hill and his fellow trade union leaders will stay in hotels. His invitation came from the Textile Workers' Union of China. The invitation for the other New Zealand trade union leaders came from their kindred union organisations in China.
