The Territorial Army
Sir,—l am getting very tired of the repeated “bellyache” by Ministers of the Government at the shortage of volunteers for the Territorial Army. The remedy is in their hands; they should do something. A case has come to my notice of a young man, accepted as a cadet officer for the British Army, being turned down for the rank of private in the New Zealand Territorial Army on medical grounds. If the Japanese had adopted similar standards, they would have been without one man in four, and the British Territorial Army would lose some, 18 per cent, of its strength. If a man is reasonably physically fit, and his eyesight can be corrected with glasses, he is good enough to defend his country.—Yours, etc., BE PREPARED. April 15, 1963.
