Learning Japanese
Sir,—Sir Leslie Munro is to be congratulated on his very valuable suggestion that certain categories of New Zealanders should learn the Japanese language. I feel sure all those people interested in increasing trade with the East will actively and promptly move in this connexion. Perhaps the best way to promote this suggestion i« to immediately choose about six members from the food trade. Post Office, railways, and waterfront industries to go immediately to Japan for this purpose and at the same time to study their various interests. In return, Japan could arrange for exchanges for siimlar activities here in New Zealand. Most students in Japan take English as a compulsory high school subject. While they learn the grammar they are unable to get sufficient practice for fluent speech. In this era of equal pay for equal work, any selection should include women staff members. — Yours, etc., RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru, April 15, 1963.
