Sixth Formers Restricted To Pines And Ciears

LONDON, April 16. Smoke from the pipes •nd cigars of sixth formers is the accepted thing at Ampleforth, a Roman Catholic school in Yorkshire, according to the “Daily Express.”
The boys were breaking no rules provided they stuck to pipes or small cigars and had their parents’ consent, said the newspaper. It quoted the headmaster. Father William Price, as saying: “It is the practice in most Roman Catholic boarding schools to allow senior boys to smoke providing their parents have no objection."
Until recently, cigarettes
were the favourite smoke among senior boys at Ampleforth, said the “Daily Express.” Then came the British Medical Association’s report on lung cancer and Father Price decided to veto cigarettes. And since he made his ruling, half the boys who used to smoke had given up completely. Father Price was aware, of course, that some of the boys probably still enjoyed a forbidden “fag,” said the “Daily Express” “It's impossible to stop boys smoking cigarettes if they are determined to do it,” said Father Price. “But I fee] the results achieved in the college are quite encouraging.”
