(New Zealana Press Association)

WELLINGTON. April 15.

In one of the biggest burglary round-ups for many years, Wellington and Lower Hutt detectives pounced on homes in the city. Lower Hutt, and Titahi Bay areas to apprehend persons and recover stolen goods worth many hundreds of pounds. At least four parties involving 15 detectives left the Centra] Police Station at dawn on Saturday to search the homes of persons suspected of major burglaries over the last few months.

The raids came after many weeks of inquiries, and the outcome fittingly rewarded members of the C. 1.8. who sacrificed normal days off to continue with the task of cleaning up some of Wellington’s biggest safe-blowing jobs as well as major burglaries and thefts of private motorcars.

A C. 1.8. spokesman said that the inquiries could unearth even more stolen property. as well as resolve other burglaries in the city and Lower Hutt.

As a result of certain information and inquiries some weeks ago. members of the burglary squad combined with Lower Hutt detectives to pursue the leads that culminated in Saturday's raids.

On Saturday evening the detective room at the Centra] Police Station looked like an auction mart. The floor and desks were littered with radios, tape recorder. parts of .vehicles, clothing, soft furnishings, safe breaking equipment and other incidentals AU goods had been recovered as a result of the morning raids The goods recovered included electric detonators and many coils of fuses There were four electric detonators and hundreds of yards of plain detonator fuses. The electric detonators and some of the fuses were found in a suitcase in a house.

Inquiries are proceeding and detectives are following up the leads established on Saturday It is thought more stolen property will be unearthed.
