RIFLEMAN SNEEZED
Bullet Hit Officer (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON. April 14. A Grenadier Guardsman sneezed on a firing-range and shot a bullet in the right ear of the officer next to him, the “Daily Telegraph” reported. Guardsman Richard Bourne was competing in the champion shot competition at Pirbright, Surrey. He was prone at the firing-point waiting for orders to fire—and sneezed. His automatic nifle went off and the bullet hit the concrete edge of the firing-point and ricocheted.
The bullet lodged in the ear of Second Lieutenant Ewen Brodie, of the Queen’s Company. Lieutenant Brodie rolled over with blood streaming down his face. A dispatch rider. Guardsman R. Hall, was sent on his motorcycle to summon an ambulance. He crashed into a ditch, breaking both wrists. Lieutenant. Brodie was eventually “patched up” and the bullet removed from his ear.
Senior officers held an inquiry on the spot Guardsman Bourne was disqualified ■from the competition.
