Barbados Migrants

Sir, —The New Zealand Government has finally broken its deplorable allwhite polcy and admitted six Barbados immigrants, and B. B. Thompson thinks negroid immigrants will smother our British traditions. Instead of worrying about traditions in this underpopulated land, surely we should be thinking of charity towards a few of the starving millions of our world. I would like to know on what authority B. B. Thompson says West Indians have caused an increase in crime, disease, and immorality in Britain. Admittedly Britain has a problem, ■but surely one of numbers rather than colour. With a population. of over 50 million Britain can say “stop”— because she has welcomed immigrants and refugees, regardless of caste, creed, or colour, for years, while New Zealand, with a bare two million, is admitting six Barbados immigrants. New Zealand should open its doors and welcome all immigrants, help them to settle, and reap the benefits of cultures, customs, and traditions, other than British.—Yours, etc.. (Mrs) MARGARET CODY. April 13, 1963.

Sir, —Behind the recent letter of Mr B. B. Thompson, national secretary of the Empire Loyalists, deploring the entry of migrants from Barbados to New Zealand, lies a, theory of racial hatred and division. He states that worse than disease are “halfcaste’’ children. Could Mr Thompson tell me what sort of children should be suffered to come unto him in New Zealand? Do Mr Thompson and his group love their fellow men?—Yours, etc.. CONSCIENCE. April 15, 1963.
