French Nuclear Tests

Sir, —I thank Nancy Meherne for her thoughtful letter on the French nuclear test. I certainly signed the petition—though in rather a defeatist manner. I just cannot see General de Gaulle reading our earnest petition and saying to himself: “I hadn’t realised our nasty bombs would upset all these good people so much. I really must stop it.” He knows quite well the tests will be unpopular with all who live in the Southern Hemisphere, and it seems to me our petition is foredoomed to failure. We must find a stronger way. Are our imports from France substantial enough for the French manufacturers — of cars, for instance—to set up a loud squawk to the French Government when we refuse to buy their product? —Yours, etc., BOYCOTT. April 14, 1963.
