BURGLARIES BY YOUTHS
“Systematic, Deliberate”
(NJ!. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 14. An 18-year-old youth who took part in what Mr A. A. Coates, S.M., said was “an alarming number of burglaries.” was sentenced to Borstal training when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland. He was Bruce Charles Edwin Smith, a plasterer, who pleaded guilty to 20 charges of burglary. The Magistrate said Smart’s part in offences committed with other youths was “systematic and deliberate.”
Appearing with Smith were Albert Maua Peterson, aged 17, a workman, who admitted 17 charges of burglary; Douglas James McKinney. aged 17, a painter, who admitted 12 charges; Brian Kennedy, aged 20. a workman. ■who admitted four changes: Robert Moraghan, aged 20, a workman, who admitted three charges, and Peter Michael Carl McCarthy. aged 21, a sheet-metal worker, who admitted two charges. Sergeant G. R. Gillespie said 27 burglaries were covered by the charges. In most cases Peterson’s father’s car was used in the offences.
Restitution amounting to £352 10s 5d was sought. The other five accused were convicted and remanded until April 22 for sentence.
