FLAMING BOMB
Negro’s House Attacked (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CLARKSDALE (Mississippi), April 14. Two white men were arrested on Friday after the throwing of flaming Molotov cocktails into a Clarksville cocktails into a Clarksdale negro home. A negro United States Congressman, Mr Charles Digg, was staying there, the Associated Press reported. No-one was injured. Mr Digg is a Democrat member of the House of Representatives from Michigan.
The Clarksdale police chief (Mr Ben Collins) said the men arrested and gaoled were Theodore Carr, aged 26, and Luther Aubrey Cauthen, aged 26.
Mr Collins said the men admitted throwing Molotov cocktails—bottles filled with petrol—into the house where Mr Diggs was an overnight guest. But Mr Collins said the men said they did not know that the Congressman was in the house. They did not know whether the residents were white or negro, and “were just having fun,” the police chief said.
The fire was reported to have caused minor damage. The people in the house, including a baby girl, escaped.
