TRADE WITH ASIA

“Australia Has Stolen March’’ (N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA. April 14. Australia had stolen a march on New Zealand over trade in the East, according to Mr H. R. Lapwood, M.P. for Rotorua, who has returned from a five-week tour of Asia. “In spite of the many fantastic, natural attractions of such places as Singapore and Malaya, one of the most impressive things about the tour was the evidence of Australian prosperity in the trade world," he said. “It was disheartening, in many respects, to see so many Australian goods on display and so few of New Zealand's. One of the main reasons given by businessmen for the scarcity of New Zealand goods was the poor shipping services between this country and the East. “I feel it behoves New Zealand to sell to those countries." he said. "Then the shipping lines will make the ships available. “Of course, the price factor is the entree to those countries. New Zealand manufacturers will have to get greater productivity from their machinery and allow concessions for the East if we are to get in,” he said.
