FAST MILE

Unscheduled Gallop

The two-year-old Boundless ran a fast, unscheduled mile 30 feet out on the course proper at Riccarton yesterday.

It was planned to send him with Magician for half a rule, but he would not trot away with his Champagne Stakes rival from near the mile. Magician went ahead and did a good solo gallop. Boundless was finally persuade,. to move off, and he went away from the mile at a good gallop. Cadiz’s young brother kept up this strong gallop to the end and recorded Imin 42 2-5 sec for a mile and 51 2-ssec for his last half-mile.

Boundless was still going fairly fast when he reached the crossing near the nine furlongs, so he went nearly a mile and a half altogether. K. Reggett rode Boundless in this gallop. Magician was ridden by N. Eastwood, and ran his halfmile in 50sec.

On race form there does not appear to be much between Magician and Boundless, and they seemed likely to dominate the betting on the Champagne Stakes at Riccarton next Monday. Boundless will have earned a reputation for toughness if he does not show some effects of his exertions yesterday, though he appeared to pull up well.
