STRIKE IN N.Y.
New Hopes For Pact (N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK. March 31. New York’s striking newspaper photo-engravers vote today on what publishers here say is their “unconditional" and “final” contract offer. United Press International reported. The strikers were expected to ratify the pact to end the city’s 113-day newspaper black-out. the agency added. The Mayor, Mr Robert Wagner, announced yesterday that the publishers had accepted certain new monetary revisions worked out by leaders of the photo-engravers’ union.
The union’s rank-and-file members on Wednesday rejected a similar contract proposal which had been accepted by the publishers and union negotiators. The publishers later agreed to look over "rearrangements” in the proposed twoyear contract if the cost of the 12.63-dollar package increase was not raised.
