Key Stands Out In Awapuni Gold Cup

“The Press" Special Seruica

WELLINGTON, March 39. The top*eius. foar-year-old mare, Key. will be short priced favoarite to win the weight*for-ace Awapuni Gold Cup at the Manawatu meeting tomorrow. Key wiH be trying to win the race for the second year in succession. i When sl»e won the event as a three-year-old last season she ran away from Picaroon and Commodore Roberts to win by five lengths m a. race record time of 2min 2 4-ssee. Meantime, she has fashioned a record which points to her winning the race again. Key has won six races this season—the North Island Challenge Stakes (seven furlongs), the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes, the Jackson Stakes, the Manawatu Challenge Stakes, the Thames Valley Stakes, and the Ohuirchill Stakes, each at a mile. A notable achievement among these performances was her defeat of Rapido in the Thames Valley Stakes when conceding him 71b. At Trentham in January she went within half a head .of beating the top stayer, Stipulate. in the Trentham Stakes (11 furlongs), showing that in addition to her great prowess as a sprinter she has the ability' to maintain her speed over a middle distance. When she won the Awapuni Gold Cup last year. Key was opposed by only four horses. This time she will have seven opponents, and the most accomplished of them is Moy, which is a good handicap and weight-for-age winner and was a close third half a length behind Key and Stipulate in the Trentham Stakes. The T.A.B. double is on the Tamatete Handicap, one mile, and the Longburn Handicap, six furlongs. There is a capacity field with a list of reserves for the first leg in which Funny Story. Karinx. and Cool are a fancied trio. Funny Story, which worked well at Hawera on Thursday, ran third to Teachers and Plantation in the Railway Handicap and second to Roodyvoo in the Hutt Handicap in her two starts at the Wellington autumn meeting. Karinx finished fourth in the Thompson Handicap at the same meeting, but spoiled his chance by a slow beginning on the second day. Cool has not been quite up to the form he showed this time last year, but in his last start at Trentham he ran with the leading bunch for six furlongs and left the impression that he might be nearing his best again. Plantation won the corresponding event so convincingly on the first day that he looks like repeating it in the Longburn Handicap, even though he has another 101 b to carry. The forecast is favourable and the track is fast. Selections:— 11.15 a.m— Karere Highweight: Count Lin, The Bandit, King’s Fun. 11.55 a.m.—Autumn Plate— First division: Benz.
