Canings Wanted
The cane should be used more in schools, according to Mr Alan Riley, father of three boys and a member of the Nottingham Education Committee. “It is the only way to check the rising crime rate in Nottingham,” he said. “I want the number of canings to be stepped up and I shall ask to be kept informed of the number during next year. There are too many illdisciplined louts in our schools, consequently there are more and more juveniles before the courts.” Mr Riley added that some teachers were afraid to use the can in case legal proceedings were taken against them.—London, March 26.
