Tax On Children’s Earnings
Sir,—Why is it that school children who work during holidays must pay tax on their earnings? This tax can be returned it applied for but surely this involves a lot of extra expense? Also, as some persons have not been informed about the rebate, they will not be able to reclaim, the tax. Where does this “extra” tax go?—Yours, etc., NON NOBIS. December 25, .1982. [The District Commissioner of Taxes (Mr J. G. Mclntosh) said: "The question of taxing school children is one of policy. A child earning under £2 a week, however, is not taxed and, in instances where the employer is assured that earnings of school children will not exceed £lO4 each in a full year, there is provision for him not to deduct any tax. The department has a special form (I.R. 12D) for employers to use io these cases. If the correspondent requires any further information, this may be obtained at the department’s office in Worcester street.”]
