TERRORIST SABOTAGE
Martial Law In Guatemala (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter — Copyright) GUATEMALA CITY, March 26. The Guatemalan Government today declared martial law for 30 days to prevent the extension of “Communist terrorist subversive activities” reported in different parts of the country on Saturday. It added that known Communist leaders had eluded frontier guards and entered the country to direct a subversive movement. The decree suspends Constitutional articles guaranteeing human rights and authorises the Defence Minister to take any steps necessary tn restore order. Hie decree was issued by the President (Mr Faentes) after a Cabinet meeting. Officials reported over the week-end that Guatemala was plagued with a wave of guerrilla operations in the north and sabotage and terrorism. They said it was developing into a sinister trend threatening the banana and coffee-growing republic of 3,800,000 people and its antiCommunist leadership. Two guerrilla bands of about 40 men each were discovered in the north eight days ago and the army is having trouble trying to wipe them out, said the Associated Press.
