LOCAL BODY CONTROL

Drainage Board’s Discussion

Proposals for two-tier administration of local government in Christchurch will be discussed by the Christchurch Drainage Board at its meeting next month, just before a meeting of all local bodies. When the subject arose last evening some members said they had not come prepared to discuss the subject First it was proposed that the policy committee should consider it and report to the board, and then that there be a special meeting. Mr M. R. Carter objected to a committee meeting which, he said, meant in effect that recommendations on a matter which was of far-reaching importance to the public would be discussed to private. Agreeing that it should be discussed openly, Mr Flint proposed that the subject be taken early on the agenda for the next meeting. The normal position was to refer a subject to a committee. which reported to the board, and then there could be full discussion, said Mr D. P. McLellan.
