Woman, Aged 24, Eligible For Preventive Detention
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Mar. 19. Theresa Maria Margaret Hunia, aged 24, had qualified for preventive detention, but one would be very loath to impose it at her age, Mr Justice McGregor said in the Supreme Court at Wellington today. His Honour dismissed an appeal by Hunia against a sentence of 18 months’ imprisonment imposed in the Magistrate’s Court at Hastings on three charges involving burglary, attempted burglary and theft from a dwelling.
Hunia did not appear and was not represented by counsel.
His Honour said the Court had received a letter from Hunia, written in prison, in which she denied the offences and claimed she had pleaded guilty under stress.
“I m satisfied that explanation cannot be accepted," his Honour said. “The offences were all of a serious type and were made more so by her long list of previous offences. She is still under 25, but has been before the Court regularly for the last five and a half years. “She has twice had the benefit of probation and, in 1958, was sentenced to Borstal training. “This was the third occasion since her release that she has been before the Court,” his Honour said.
